In Fall 2017, nearly 100 basebuilding organizers convened in five Learning Circles held across the country to build capacity in areas of need and discuss building and measuring power. These five Learning Circles followed two different capacity building/technical assistance tracks: Communication Strategy and Social Media and Fundraising, Funding Models, and Budgeting.

Training and Capacity Building

Communication Strategy and Social Media focused Learning Circles were held in Washington, DC; Little Rock, AR; and Los Angeles, CA. While the Learning Circle held in Los Angeles had a special emphasis on youth organizers, all of these convenings had a shared focus on communications tools, narrative framing, best practices for email, Twitter, and Faceboook, digital security, and multi-channel campaign strategy. This technical assistance training was provided by Social Movement Technologies (SMT).

Building and Measuring Power

In addition to capacity building, participants also spent time at these Learning Circles in modified focus groups defining power, discussing why building community power is important, and considering measures for identifying impact of power building. These discussions also facilitated a shared understanding of how community power manifests and barriers to and resources for building community power.
